Faculty of Fine Arts
The aim of this faculty is to provide students with an essential grounding in the fundamentals of artistic activity. For the first six months all students are expected to take this General Foundation Course. After completion of this, students select their major area of study and enter the relevant specialist foundation course.
I. General Foundation Course
All students must take this course in the first semester of their first year. All basic practical and theoretical aspects of the arts are studied with the aim of providing each students a wide artistic foundation before going on to more specialized education of their chosen major.
II. Practical Courses (3 Departments, 11 Courses)
Department of Fine Arts
- 1. Nihonga (Japanese-style Painting) Course
- In this course students cultivate creativity and individuality through the traditional medium of Japanese painting. There is a studio for copying classical painting.
- 2. Painting Course
- In this course students first study a board spectrum of painting disciplines from figurative to abstract and then proceed to a more personally motivated program of specialized study. There is a studio for fresco and wall painting.
- 3. Sculpture Course
- Students are grounded in the basics of sculpture and study the theories of space and modeling using materials such as clay, wood, stone, metal and resin.
- 4. Printmaking Course
- Students study basic printmaking skills and proceed to specialize in the media of lithography, silkscreen, etching etc.
- 5. Conceptual and Media Art Course
- After studying the various foundations of visual expression, students go on to work and experiment in more specialized fields. They also study the technique of photography and video.

- Students study graphic work, advertising planning, visual communication, and textiles.
- 2. Environment Design
- Studying both the inside and outside environment, architecture and furniture design, students make plans and produce works.
- 3. Product Design
- Studying various areas such as household products, machines and equipment, students construct objects and make plans for their practical use.

- Students study the materials and techniques of ceramics and produce works.
- 2. Urushi Lacquering Course
- Studying various materials such as urushi and wood, and the techniques of urushi lacquering, students produce their own works.
- 3. Dyeing and Weaving Course
- After studying the basics of dyeing and weaving, students proceed to specialize in various techniques and materials.

III. Special Seminar Subject
Interdisciplinary seminars are held by staff from all education departments. Themes of seminars are categorized into Humanities, Natural Sciences, and History of Art. There are also open seminars, themes of which are freely decided by staff and students.

Besides general subjects, There are about 50 specialized subjects under three main thematic groups of Humanities, Natural Sciences, and of Art Hostory. All academic subjects are related to the students' main area of practical study.

Graduate School of Art
The graduate art course at Kyoto City University of Arts takes two years to complete, and was established for the purpose of contributing toward the development of culture by study and research into the technical and theoretical aspects of art and its practical applications, Being based on general and specialized knowledge gained on the undergraduate course. At present there is only the Master's Program available.Contents

All students are assigned a personal tutor at the start of the Program. During the duration of their chosen major students are expected to take academic credits.
- * History of Art is the academic course. Tutors are available in all of the following subjects:
Aesthetics, Science of Arts, History of Japanese Art, History of Oriental Art, History of Western Art, History of Crafts, Theory of Design, Theory of Art Education.
Annual Exhibition
Kyoto City University of Arts holds its Annual Exhibition in February at the Kyoto Municipal Museum and the University Hall.
All students can exhibit their own works as their yearly study.
Foreign Students
Foreign students are accepted only to the post graduate course. There are two programs available:There are various conditions to qualify for admissions.
- Non-degree research program (six months - two years)
- Degree program (two years)

Note
- Persons qualified for admission to the Graduate School of Art should meet both criteria A and B.
- You should be one of the following terms:
Those who have finished an undergraduate course in a college or a university.
Those who have finished a school education for 16 years abroad.
Those who are appointed by the Minister of Education.
Those who are recognized by our Graduate School as having attainments equal to those who have finished an undergraduate course in a college or a university.
- Those who can speak Japanese well enough to study.
- Necessary documents:

- Official certificate of graduation from Bachelor's course and official transcripts of university records.
(No photocopies. Diploma is not acceptable.)- Study program.
(Describe in detail and as concretely as possible your past major field of study and you desired major field of study at Kyoto City University of Arts.)- Photograph, slides of your work or photocopies of your papers.
(Applicants for History of Art should submit photocopies of papers.)- Certificate of Japanese proficiency.
(No photocopy. It should be certified by a public organization of a Japanese language institution.)- Letter of recommendation which is written by your advisor or an alternative person.
(No photocopy.)- Health certificate.
(No photocopy. It should be certified within recent three months.)- Letters of the guarantor in Japan and the financial supporter.
(Use provided form.)- Four full-faced photographs (4cm x 4cm).
- Admissions are judged on the basis of application form, papres, and works, and are decided by the president of Kyoto City University of Arts.

The office for application is open from 9 am to 4 pm, and is closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays.

- The period of attendance of foreign students is limited to two years. The school year starts on April 1 and ends on March 31.
- First semester: April to September
- Second semester: October to March
- There is no financial aid program at the University, and no dormitory either on campus or off campus.
- Tuition (as of April 1995): 411,600yen (one year) / 205,800yen (one semester)
Registration Fee: 69,000yen (at the time you enter)

- Six months' study in this course will qualify you to take the entrance examination of the Master course of our university.
The non-degree course is a kind of preparatory course for the master degree course. You are qualified to take the entrance examination of the master course after studying at the non-degree course for at least six months. No language handicap is considered for those who wish to take the examination of the master course, and they are treated as same as Japanese students. The applicants for the non-degree course are requested to present portfolio and other necessary documents, whereas examination of the master course includes written tests and a criterion of art works. At present, the quotas of foreign students are 18 for the non-degree course and 8 for the master degree course, respectively; the students are from Austria, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, India, Korea, UK, US, etc.
