Kyoto City University of Arts has two main faculties of Art and Music. The total numbers of teaching staff and students are about 100 and 800, respectively. Each faculty has both undergraduate and graduate courses.
The University was established 10 years after the Meiji period, in 1880, by the Kyoto Prefectural Government with the aim of teaching both Oriental and Western Painting. The present University is a successor to over 100 years of art education and has a pedigree of both graduate and teacher artists and craftsmen who are held in high art historical esteem such as Seiho TAKEUCHI, Shouen UEMURA, Bakusen TSUCHIDA and Kunitaro SUDA. Up to the present day the total number of graduates amounts to more than 10,000.
The Music Faculty was established in the University in 1969, however the history of this relatively new faculty goes back to 1952. It has produced many famous musicians and at present concentrates western music.
In 1980, the University was moved to a spacious new campus at the foot of a mountain range in the southwest of Kyoto. The new University buildings are located in a beautiful natural setting that is blessed with a moderate climate and offer a creative place for art, crafts and music which respond to the need of modern society.
The Graduate Course was established in 1980 in the Art Faculty and in 1986 in the Music Faculty. The total numbers of students for Art and Music are 100 and 40, respectively, and both graduate courses last 2 years.
Our University aims at being open internationally, and not only exchanges students and teaching staff with China through the twinning of Kyoto and Xian City, with England through the exchange agreement between the University and the Royal College of Art, but also accepts many students from all over the world for research and postgraduate study.
As Japanese society changes from an industrial to an individual cultural bases and people's desire for a higher quality of art in their lives become stronger, the role of the art university will be vital in responding to this need.
Kyoto was the ancient capital and cultural center of Japan and has given birth to tradition of arts, crafts and performing arts which have been handed down till the present day. Kyoto City University of Arts, the successor to this rich history of tradition and creativity is now responding for its next step into the future.
